On Saturday (August 9), Pakistan defeated West Indies by 5 wickets in the first ODI of a three-match series in Trinidad. This victory gave Mohammad Rizwan’s team a 1-0 lead in the series.
West Indies, batting first, lost Brandon King (4) in the first over to Shaheen Afridi. Evin Lewis and Kasey Carty added 77 runs off 82 balls for the second wicket, with Lewis scoring 60 off 62 balls and Carty contributing 30 off 39 balls.
Sherfane Rutherford (10) was dismissed by Salman Ali Agha before he could make an impact. However, Shai Hope and Roston Chase built a 64-run partnership. Hope scored 55 off 77 balls, while Chase made 53 off 54 balls before falling to Naseem Shah. Gudakesh Motie chipped in with a quick 31 off 18 balls towards the end.
Shaheen Afridi was the pick of the bowlers, taking 4 wickets for 51 runs in 8 overs, while Naseem Shah claimed 3 wickets for 55 runs in the same number of overs.
In reply, Pakistan lost opener Saim Ayub (5) early. Abdullah Shafique (29) departed after a promising start. Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan then steadied the innings but struggled initially against Jayden Seales and Shamar Joseph, going 16 balls without scoring at one point. The duo eventually added 55 runs off 69 balls, with Babar scoring 47 off 64 balls and Rizwan making 53 off 69 balls.
Captain Salman Agha contributed 23 off 26 balls, but at 180/5 in 37.2 overs, Pakistan were under pressure, needing 101 more runs. Debutant Hasan Nawaz and Hossain Talat, returning to the team after six years, forged an unbroken partnership to guide Pakistan to victory without further loss. Nawaz remained unbeaten on 63 off 54 balls, including 5 fours and 3 sixes, while Talat scored an unbeaten 41 off 37 balls.
For West Indies, Shamar Joseph took 2 wickets for 65 runs, while Jayden Seales, Gudakesh Motie, and Roston Chase picked up one wicket each.
The second ODI of the three-match series is scheduled for Sunday (August 10) morning.
