In a fierce encounter with gunmen in Kulgam, Jammu and Kashmir, two Indian soldiers have been killed. According to official Indian sources, two other soldiers were injured in the ongoing gunbattle on Saturday (August 9), with the total number of injured reported to be around 10.
The 15th Corps Headquarters of the Indian Army stated in an X post, "The Chinar Corps pays tribute to the supreme sacrifice of brave soldiers Lieutenant Naik Pritpal Singh and Harminder Singh, who laid down their lives in the line of duty for the nation. Their courage and dedication will forever inspire us. The Indian Army expresses its deepest condolences."
According to NDTV, the operation is still ongoing, with hundreds of soldiers engaged in a massive counter-terrorism operation to track down hidden "terrorists." Drones and attack helicopters are being deployed in the operation. Amid intense gunfire and occasional explosions, drones have been observed dropping explosives in suspected areas within the dense alpine forest of Akhal.
The report also noted that the army, including special forces and para-troopers, is proceeding cautiously. On Friday, following intelligence about the presence of a large group of terrorists in the Akhal area, a joint operation by the Indian Army, police, and CRPF was launched, leading to the outbreak of the conflict.
Preliminary reports suggest that one local terrorist may have been killed in the intense exchange of fire. Police sources indicated that at the start of the operation, there was information about the presence of five terrorists, at least three of whom are believed to be foreign terrorists trained in jungle warfare.
