Gazipur Metropolitan Police Commissioner Nazmul Karim Khan announced in a press conference on Saturday at 12:30 PM that journalist Asaduzzaman Tuhin was murdered for recording a fraud attempt. The incident occurred on Thursday evening in the busy Chandana Chowrasta area of Gazipur, where Tuhin, a staff reporter for the daily newspaper *Protidiner Kagoj*, was fatally stabbed inside a market.
According to the police commissioner, a man named Badsha withdrew 25,000 taka from a bank and was targeted by a woman named Golapi in a honey-trap scam. When Badsha realized the deception and pushed her away after an altercation, other accomplices, who were lying in wait, began attacking him. Fearing for his life, Badsha fled, and Tuhin, who was nearby, recorded the incident as part of his journalistic duties. The assailants noticed the recording and demanded Tuhin delete the video, but he refused. Enraged, they stabbed him to death with sharp weapons and fled.
Within 24 hours of the incident, law enforcement arrested seven suspects involved in the murder. The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) detained one suspect, while the Gazipur Metropolitan Police (GMP) arrested six others during raids across Gazipur on Friday night. Using CCTV footage, police identified eight individuals, and efforts are underway to apprehend the remaining suspect. The commissioner expressed regret for failing to prevent the crime, emphasizing that while prevention is challenging, the police are committed to detection and ensuring justice. He assured that a charge sheet would be filed within 15 days of receiving the autopsy report, and the maximum punishment would be sought.
In a separate press conference on Saturday morning at the RAB camp in Porabari, RAB Company Commander Police Superintendent KM Mamun Khan Chisti claimed that the detained suspect, Md. Swadhin, confessed to the murder. He stated that Tuhin was deliberately targeted for recording the incident, as the group ensured his death by repeatedly stabbing him. Md. Swadhin, son of Noor Mohammad from Faridpur Upazila in Pabna, is a tenant in Nagpara, Mohammad Ali’s house.
The commissioner noted that Gazipur has faced challenges since August 5 last year, with factory closures leading to unemployment and a rise in crime. He acknowledged the influence of a “previous regime” destabilizing the district, diverting police attention from other crimes. However, the GMP is working to restore public safety. The commissioner extended condolences to Tuhin’s family and apologized to the journalist community for failing to ensure adequate security.
Asaduzzaman Tuhin (38), from Bhatipara village in Fulbaria, Mymensingh, lived with his wife and two sons in a rented house in Chandana Chowrasta.
