On August 2, 2025, a massive fire broke out at an oil depot in Sochi, a city in Russia’s Krasnodar region, following a Ukrainian drone attack. Local authorities reported the incident on Sunday, confirming that the attack occurred late Saturday night. Sochi, known for hosting the 2014 Winter Olympics, is located in Russia’s southwest.
In a Telegram post, Krasnodar region Governor Veniamin Kondratyev stated that the drone attack, orchestrated by Kyiv, struck Sochi, with debris from the downed drones hitting an oil tank, sparking the blaze. Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine began in February 2022, Ukraine has consistently targeted Russian oil and gas infrastructure.
Kondratyev reported that 127 firefighters worked through the night to control the fire. Russian media published images showing flames and thick black smoke rising from the site, though AFP could not independently verify their authenticity.
Russia’s aviation authority, Rosaviatsia, temporarily halted flights at Sochi’s airport due to the attack but resumed operations shortly after. Sochi, located approximately 400 kilometers (250 miles) from the Ukrainian border, rarely experiences missile or drone attacks compared to other Russian cities.
Local officials noted that a previous Ukrainian drone attack in late July resulted in two deaths in Sochi. Kyiv has not yet commented on Saturday’s attack. However, Ukrainian authorities have warned that they will intensify airstrikes on Russia in response to recent Russian attacks that have killed numerous civilians.
