Four Members of Same Family Killed as Covered Van Overturns on Private Car in Cumilla

In a tragic incident, four members of a family, including a husband and wife, were killed when a covered van overturned and crushed a private car on the Dhaka-Chittagong Highway at the North Rampur U-turn in Cumilla. The accident occurred around 12:30 pm on Friday, August 22, 2025, leaving three passengers of a CNG-powered auto-rickshaw injured. The incident was confirmed by Highway Police Sub-Inspector (SI) Anisur Rahman.

The deceased have been identified as Mohammad Omar Ali (80), his wife Nurjahan Begum (65), and their two sons, Abul Hashem (50) and Abul Kashem (45), all residents of Hosainpur village in Burura Upazila, Cumilla. According to SI Anisur Rahman, the family hailed from Mudaffarganj in Laksam Upazila, though further details about their identities are yet to be confirmed.

Eyewitnesses reported that the private car was making a U-turn from the city toward the Laksam road when the Dhaka-bound covered van, attempting to avoid an oncoming bus, lost control and overturned. The van subsequently crushed the private car and a nearby CNG auto-rickshaw, resulting in the fatalities and injuries. Fire Service personnel and Highway Police recovered the bodies of the four victims from the wreckage around 2:00 pm. The accident caused significant traffic congestion on the highway. The injured were rushed to Cumilla Medical College Hospital for treatment.
