Husband Sentenced to Death for Killing Wife Over Dowry in Mohammadpur

Dhaka, August 4, 2025: A court has sentenced Mirza Sakhawat Hossain (51) to death for murdering his wife over dowry demands in Mohammadpur, Dhaka, two years ago. The verdict was delivered on Monday by Judge Mosa. Kamrunnahar of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-6 in Dhaka. Following the announcement of the verdict, Mirza Sakhawat was sent to prison.

According to case documents, Fatema Begum (45) was beaten to death on January 10, 2023, in a rented apartment in Mohammadpur over a dowry demand of Tk 1 crore. Fatema’s elder sister, Arjina Begum, filed a case against Mirza Sakhawat under Section 11(ka) of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act at Mohammadpur Police Station. Sakhawat was arrested at the time and has been in custody since.

The investigation concluded with a charge sheet submitted against Sakhawat on August 24, 2023. Saiful Islam, a bench assistant at the tribunal, told that the prosecution presented 17 witnesses in court against Sakhawat.
According to the plaintiff’s allegations, Sakhawat had been torturing Fatema Begum for various reasons since their marriage. He repeatedly pressured her to sell her family’s land to bring Tk 1 crore as dowry, which Fatema refused. This led to years of domestic disputes. On the day of the incident, Sakhawat struck Fatema on the head with a pestle in their Mohammadpur apartment, resulting in her death.
