Interim Government Plans to Procure 40,000 Body Cameras for February Election

To strengthen security at polling stations during the upcoming general election in February, the interim government has planned to procure at least 40,000 body-worn cameras for the police force.

The decision was discussed in a high-level meeting chaired by Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus on Saturday at the state guesthouse, Yamuna, in Dhaka.

Home Affairs Adviser Lieutenant General (Retd.) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, along with Chief Adviser’s Special Assistants Khoda Box Chowdhury and Faiz Taiyab Ahmed, were present at the meeting. Faiz Taiyab Ahmed stated that the procurement process for the 40,000 body cameras, commonly known as bodycams, is in its final stages. He noted that these devices will enhance security at thousands of vulnerable polling stations. “We aim to procure the bodycams by October so that the police force can receive adequate training on their core features, including AI capabilities,” he said. Bangladeshi authorities have contacted three companies from Germany, China, and Thailand for the supply of these cameras. Police officers and constables will wear the devices on their chests during the election. Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus instructed officials to expedite the procurement of the bodycams and ensure proper training for thousands of police personnel. “We must ensure complete security at all polling stations, no matter the cost. Our goal is to make the February election the most free, fair, and peaceful in the country’s history,” he said. During the meeting, the Chief Adviser’s Special Assistant for Telecommunications and Information Technology also announced plans to launch an election app for the upcoming polls. The app will provide detailed information about the February election, including candidate details, polling station updates, and a system for submitting complaints. The Chief Adviser directed officials to launch the app promptly and ensure it is user-friendly for the country’s over 100 million voters.
