Joe Root has etched his name in the history books as the first batter to score 6000 runs in the World Test Championship (WTC). The England veteran achieved this milestone on the fourth day of the decisive Test against India at The Oval.
During England’s second innings, Root reached the 6000-run mark in the 40th over by hitting a boundary off Mohammed Siraj, taking his score to 28 runs. Having scored 29 runs in the first innings, Root needed just 25 more runs to reach this landmark. This was his 69th WTC match, and he remains the only batter to achieve this feat in the competition’s history. Following him on the WTC run-scorers’ list are Steve Smith, Marnus Labuschagne, Ben Stokes, and Travis Head. Root’s 6000 runs include 20 centuries and 22 half-centuries, with an impressive batting average above 52.
England currently leads the series 2-1. In the second innings of the ongoing Oval Test, Root scored 105 runs before being dismissed. On the fifth day, England needs 35 more runs to win with 4 wickets in hand.
