BNP Joint Secretary General Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Annie stated that the July Movement has made it clear that there is no place for "helmeted politics" like that of the Chhatra League in Bangladesh. He remarked that the July uprising forced a fascist like Sheikh Hasina to flee the country.
Annie made these comments on Sunday, August 3, before the formal start of a student rally organized by Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal at Shahbagh in Dhaka. The rally was held to mark the anniversary of the July mass uprising.
Chaired by Chhatra Dal Central President Rakibul Islam, the event was moderated by the organization’s General Secretary Nasir Uddin. At the outset, the General Secretary paid tribute to Chhatra Dal members killed in various movements over the past 15 years.
Annie further said, “The July Movement has shown that there is no place for secret torture cells like Aynaghar in this country. Those cells have been destroyed. Over the past year, students and all political parties have demanded visible justice for Sheikh Hasina from the interim government. The people of this country will not forgive if Sheikh Hasina is not brought to justice. This justice is so crucial because we have been repeatedly tortured for protesting against her.”
The rally featured BNP Acting Chairman Tariq Rahman as the chief guest, joining virtually, and BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir as a special guest. Other central leaders, including BNP Vice Chairman Shamsuzzaman Dudu and Joint Secretary General Habib Un Nabi Khan Sohel, were also present.
