Meeting Between Chief Adviser and Myanmar’s UN Special Envoy Raises Hopes for Sustainable Rohingya Crisis Solution

On Thursday, the UN Special Rapporteur on the human rights situation in Myanmar, Tom Andrews, met with the Chief Adviser of the interim government, Professor Muhammad Yunus, at the state guesthouse Jamuna in Dhaka.

During the meeting, Andrews commended Professor Yunus for his leadership in prioritizing the Rohingya crisis on the international stage. He expressed hope that sustained efforts from all parties could lead to a swift and sustainable resolution. Andrews urged Bangladesh to continue its leadership in addressing the crisis.

He further noted that the initiative to convene an international conference on the Rohingya issue at the UN headquarters in New York on September 30 was driven by Professor Yunus’s efforts. Addressing the Chief Adviser, Andrews said, “The world is grateful for Bangladesh’s generosity in providing shelter and support to the Rohingyas. Your leadership in keeping the hope for a permanent solution alive is particularly commendable.” Professor Yunus expressed optimism that the upcoming UN conference would pave the way for effective solutions to this longstanding crisis. He voiced concern over the declining international aid for Rohingyas in Bangladesh, which has made it challenging to provide essential services like healthcare and education. He called on Andrews to continue efforts to ensure adequate funding. Andrews acknowledged Bangladesh’s constructive role in engaging various stakeholders to resolve the crisis. However, he expressed disappointment over disruptions caused by hate campaigns to the UN Secretary-General’s initiative to establish a humanitarian channel to stabilize Rakhine State and create conditions for the repatriation of refugees. Tom Andrews is in Bangladesh to participate in a stakeholder dialogue on the Rohingya issue in Cox’s Bazar on August 25. Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus will inaugurate the dialogue.
