Modi Announces China Visit Amid Tensions with the US, Putin to Attend as Well

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to visit China after a six-year gap, at a time when relations with the United States are strained. Coinciding with his visit, Russian President Vladimir Putin is also expected to travel to China, adding a significant dimension to the trip. This development has been reported by Indian media outlet NDTV.

According to the report, Modi will attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in Tianjin, China, from August 31 to September 1, 2025. This marks his first visit to China since the 2020 clash between Indian and Chinese troops in the Himalayan region, with his last visit being in 2019. The trip is considered significant for several reasons, particularly as Delhi appears to be prioritizing mending ties with China amid strained relations with the US.

Since US President Donald Trump’s return to power, relations with the three major powers—China, Russia, and India—have grown increasingly frosty. Against this backdrop, the meeting of these nations’ leaders at the SCO summit could signal new directions in global diplomacy. Despite China’s open support for Pakistan during recent tensions over the Pehelgam attack in Kashmir, India’s participation in the SCO regional summit is viewed positively by many. The summit is expected to focus on discussions around regional security, counterterrorism, and trade issues among SCO member states. Efforts will likely be made to stabilize and foster dialogue in India-China relations. There is also the possibility of informal meetings between Modi, Chinese President Xi Jinping, and Russian President Vladimir Putin on the sidelines of the summit.
Notably, Modi and Xi met during the BRICS summit in Kazan, Russia, in October 2024, after which efforts to reduce border tensions between India and China gained momentum
