
**Khagrachhari, August 19, 2025, 11:39 PM** A police sub-inspector (SI) has been accused of brutally beating a young man in Dighinala Upazila, Khagrachhari, for refusing to provide a free internet connection. The incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon at the Merung Police Outpost. The injured youth, Ismail Hossain (27), is an employee of a local cable internet service provider. Following the incident, enraged locals gathered in front of the outpost, protesting the alleged assault. The situation was later brought under control by the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Dighinala Police Station, Md. Zakaria. According to Ismail’s complaint, three days prior, Sub-Inspector Nazmul Hasan, the in-charge of the Merung outpost, demanded a free internet connection. Ismail informed him that he would need to discuss the matter with his higher authorities and left. On Tuesday afternoon, while passing by the outpost, Ismail was called in. Initially, he was accused of stealing a motorcycle, but later, SI Nazmul Hasan allegedly beat him severely, causing serious injuries to both of his hands.
