Meghmallar Basu Loses Temper Over Questions on Proposal to Make Hasina DUCSU Lifetime Member

On Tuesday (August 19, 2025), a press conference was held at Dhaka University's Madhur Canteen under the banner of the "Pratirodh Parishad" panel. During the event, Meghmallar Basu, the General Secretary (GS) candidate from the Democratic Student Alliance and president of the Dhaka University branch of the Bangladesh Student Union, became visibly agitated when questioned about a past proposal to make former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina a lifetime member of the Dhaka University Central Students' Union (DUCSU).

In 2019, following her victory in the DUCSU elections, Sheikh Tasnim Afroz Emi, the then Vice President (VP) of Shamsunnahar Hall, had proposed making Sheikh Hasina a lifetime DUCSU member. This statement, made in a Facebook post, has recently sparked widespread discussion. Emi, who is now contesting for the VP position in the upcoming DUCSU elections as a candidate of the Democratic Student Alliance, was the focus of questions during the press conference.

When journalists raised the issue, Meghmallar Basu reacted sharply, saying, "If you want to ask questions about this, you can do so, but not during this press conference. Emi Apa is on campus; you can ask her personally. We don’t want to discuss this during a press conference about a central issue." She further stated, "We believe a media narrative is being created through this. We haven’t responded to those who spoke in favor of Sheikh Hasina before 2023, and we don’t want to amplify this issue. We consider it a trap and don’t want this discussion to continue."
On Monday (August 18, 2025), candidates of the Democratic Student Alliance, including Emi and Meghmallar Basu, collected nomination forms for the DUCSU elections but did not announce their panel. On Tuesday, the alliance officially announced its full panel at the press conference.[](https://www.kalbela.com/politics/214722)
