Level Playing Field Yet to Be Ensured in DUCSU Election: Chhatra Dal

Members of Chhatra Dal, the student wing of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, have stated that the Dhaka University administration has failed to ensure a level playing field for the upcoming Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) election. The remarks were made during a press conference held at Madhu’s Canteen on the university campus on Monday, August 18.

Nahiduzzaman Shipon, General Secretary of the Dhaka University Chhatra Dal, said, “Following the mass uprising of July-August and the long struggle against fascism, an opportunity for democratic practice has emerged across Bangladesh. As part of this, the DUCSU and hall union elections, long demanded by the students of Dhaka University, are set to take place. Chhatra Dal has been cooperating with the university administration since August 5 to facilitate the DUCSU election and ensure a free, fair, participatory, and joyous electoral environment.”

He further stated, “Today was the last day to collect nomination forms for the DUCSU and hall union elections. In line with this, some Chhatra Dal members and general students from Fazilatunnesa Mujib Hall went to collect nomination forms after 3:30 PM. At that time, a group of aggressive students from the same hall obstructed them, incited a mob, mentally harassed them, and attempted physical assault.” “We immediately informed the DUCSU Chief Presiding Officer and the Provost of Fazilatunnesa Mujib Hall about the incident. However, their failure to control the situation forced the affected students to leave the hall without collecting their nomination forms. We have appealed to the Chief Returning Officer to take swift action against those involved and ensure equal opportunities for all,” Shipon added.
