Tangail, August 2, 2025: Police have arrested five leaders and activists of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) in Tangail on charges of demanding Tk 5 lakh in extortion from a fish farmer. The arrests were made on Friday night and Saturday morning in the Santosh area of Tangail Municipality.
The arrested individuals are Jubayer Ahmed, organizational secretary of Tangail city BNP and president of Ward No. 7 BNP; Golam Rabbani, religious affairs secretary of city BNP and president of Ward No. 8 BNP; Shah Alam Mia, member of city BNP and general secretary of Ward No. 8 BNP; and party activists Abdullah Al Mamun and Sabbir Mia. The complainant, Azharul Islam, is also a resident of the Santosh area.
According to police and the complainant, an unidentified person delivered an extortion letter to one of Azharul’s employees on Thursday night. Azharul received the letter on Friday, which was written on a pad labeled 'Killer Group, Murderous Gang,' with the slogan, “Pay the extortion, or pay with your life.” The letter demanded Tk 5 lakh to be left under a tree in front of former MP Kagmari Mahmudul Hasan’s house by 7 PM on August 3. It also warned against contacting the administration or police, threatening to kill Azharul and make his body disappear if the demand was not met. The letter went viral on social media on Friday, leading to the arrest of the five individuals on suspicion of involvement.
Azharul Islam filed a case at Tangail Sadar Police Station on Saturday morning, naming several unidentified persons as accused. Confirming the arrests, Tangail Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Tanvir Ahmed said the five were detained with the assistance of detective police. Abdullah Al Mamun and Sabbir Mia agreed to provide confessional statements in court and were sent to court on Saturday.
Meanwhile, Tangail city BNP president Mehedi Hasan called the arrests a conspiracy, stating, “This is an attempt to politically harm and discredit them. These individuals have no negative reputation in the area.”
