In Ruma Upazila, Bandarban, three individuals have been detained by joint forces in connection with the alleged rape of a fifth-grade student. The arrests were made early Wednesday morning. The detained individuals are identified as Kyhla Wang Marma (19), Uhaising Marma (20), and a minor, all residents of the upazila.
According to local sources, the victim was allegedly raped by five teenagers and young men at different times while returning from a tutoring session. After the incident came to light, a mediation meeting was held on Tuesday night involving local union representatives. The mediation decided that the accused would pay the victim's family 10,000 taka for medical expenses and a fine of 50,000 taka. When news spread about attempts to suppress the rape allegations through mediation, joint forces conducted an operation and arrested three of the accused.
When contacted, the Officer-in-Charge of Ruma Police Station, Md. Sohrawardi, told Prothom Alo that a joint operation by the army and police was launched after the rape incident was reported. Three of the five accused have been detained, and operations are ongoing to apprehend the remaining two. He added that the victim has been brought for medical treatment, and a case is being processed regarding the incident.
