Two Containers Missing from Chattogram Port

Chattogram Port has reported the mysterious disappearance of two containers, one of which contains fabrics worth approximately BDT 1.5 crore. Despite completing all formalities, including customs duties and port charges, for delivery after participating in an auction, the containers remain untraceable.

According to sources, in February, Selim Reza, the owner of Shah Amanat Trading, purchased a container with around 27 tons of fabrics for BDT 85 lakh at a customs auction. After inspecting the goods, he paid BDT 1.07 crore, covering duties, the cost of the goods, and port charges. However, when he arrived at the yard with a truck on February 26, he was informed that the container was missing. Six months have passed since the incident, but no trace of the container has been found.

Selim Reza lodged a complaint, stating, “I have sent three letters to the Customs Commissioner, but I have not received any satisfactory response. Our business is on the verge of collapse, and we have incurred financial losses exceeding BDT 1.5 crore.” Mohammad Sakib Hossain, Assistant Commissioner of Chattogram Custom House, said, “We will first send a letter to the port to check if the goods can be located. If they are not found, the refund process will begin.”
Mohammad Omar Faruk, Secretary of Chattogram Port, commented, “There are 48,000 to 49,000 containers at Chattogram Port. During handling, it’s possible that a container is not in its designated place. It must be somewhere else. We are searching for it. There’s no chance of it being missing. We will inform once it is found.”
