Three Youths Arrested with Gold Bars Worth Nearly Tk 8 Crore in Jessore

In Jessore, the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) arrested three youths with 36 gold bars, valued at approximately Tk 7 crore 89 lakh 53 thousand 668, during separate operations on Thursday (August 28). The arrests took place at Kodalia around 6 a.m. and Taraganj Bazar around 9 a.m. in Jessore Sadar Upazila.

The detained individuals were identified as Ashraful Islam Sajid (23), son of Akram Hossain from Angaria Singair village in Manikganj’s Singair Upazila; Zahid Hossain (26), son of Nur Mohammad from Barandipara in Jessore town; and Sujan Kumar Bappi (34), son of Ananda Chandra Das from Fatepur village in Jhikargacha Upazila.

According to BGB sources,“Acting on a tip-off, BGB conducted two separate raids in Kodalia and Taraganj Bazar, detaining the three individuals. A search revealed 36 gold bars, weighing a total of 5.334 kilograms, hidden in their moneybags and around their waists.” Lieutenant Colonel Saifullah Siddiqui, Commanding Officer of the 49th BGB Battalion in Jessore, told Kalbela that preliminary interrogations revealed the suspects were smuggling the gold bars from Dhaka to India via Jessore. The gold was sourced from smugglers in Manikgangrown in Manikganj and Jatrabari areas of Dhaka, with the intent to transport it to Jessore and Chuknagar for smuggling across the border. He further stated that a case has been filed against the arrested individuals, who have been handed over to Jessore Kotwali Model Police Station. The seized gold bars have been deposited in the government treasury.
