Two Bangladeshi nationals have been charged in Malaysia with terrorism-related offenses linked to the Islamic State (IS) militant group, according to a report by Malaysia’s state news agency, Bernama.
The accused, Md Mamun Ali, 31, and Md Refat Bishat, 27, faced charges in the Johor Bahru Sessions Court on Friday, August 15, 2025. Mamun Ali is accused of supporting the IS terrorist group through a Facebook account under the name “Sahifulla Islam” between July 28, 2023, and April 30, 2024. The charge, filed under Section 130J(1)(a) of the Penal Code, carries a potential penalty of life imprisonment, up to 30 years in jail, or a fine upon conviction.
The charges were brought before Judge Datuk Ahmad Kamal Arifin Ismail, who scheduled the next hearing for September 12, 2025, to appoint a Bangladeshi interpreter, as the accused did not fully understand the charges read in Malay. Deputy Public Prosecutors Maryam Jamielah Ab Manaff and Nur Ainaa Ridzwan represented the prosecution for Mamun Ali and Refat Bishat, respectively. Both accused were unrepresented by legal counsel. No bail was offered.
