Rangpur, August 10, 2025 – Two men were brutally beaten to death by a mob in Taraganj upazila of Rangpur on Saturday night, over suspicions of van theft. The incident occurred around 9 pm at Burirhat Bottola in Soyar Union.
The victims, identified as 40-year-old Ruplal Das, a cobbler from Ghonirampur in Kursha Union, and 35-year-old Pradip Das, a van driver from Baluabhata village in Mithapukur upazila, were attacked by locals. According to police, Pradip, who was Ruplal’s niece’s husband, had traveled from Mithapukur to Ghonirampur to discuss Ruplal’s daughter’s wedding, scheduled to be finalized on Sunday.
Locals reported that Pradip lost his way and contacted Ruplal from Kazirhat in Soyar Union. The two then proceeded together in Pradip’s van. Upon reaching Bottola on the Taraganj–Kazirhat road, they were stopped by locals who suspected them of being van thieves, a suspicion fueled by a recent incident on July 28 involving a child’s murder and a stolen van in the area.
Witnesses stated that the mob searched a sack in Pradip’s van and found four plastic bottles containing what family members claimed was homemade liquor. When one bottle was opened, two individuals reportedly felt unwell from the smell, escalating suspicions that the men were using drugs to steal vans. The mob then attacked Ruplal and Pradip, dragging them to the Burirhat High School field.
Both men fell unconscious during the assault. Police rescued them around 11 pm and rushed them to Taraganj Upazila Health Complex, where Ruplal was declared dead. Pradip was transferred to Rangpur Medical College Hospital but succumbed to his injuries early Sunday.
Taraganj police station Officer-in-Charge M.A. Faruq confirmed the deaths and stated that preparations are underway to file a case regarding the lynching.
