Viral Video of Demanding 5 Lakh in Extortion, NCP Leader Says— I Said It Mischievously

Allegations of extortion have once again surfaced against Nizam Uddin, the joint coordinator of the new committee for the Chittagong metropolitan branch of the National Citizens' Party (NCP). A video alleging that he demanded five lakh taka to suppress the port-centered movement has gone viral on social media. However, Nizam claims that a malicious circle is working against him. He says he uttered those words in a mischievous manner and did not take any money.

On Monday (11 August), in a video, Nizam declared himself innocent and challenged that if anyone can prove his involvement in taking the money, he would quit politics.

In the video, Nizam Uddin said, "For the past one to one-and-a-half months, a malicious group has been politically harassing me by raising false allegations. Today, they have made another video viral in my name. Actually, the video is from the night of May 30, around 12:10 or 12:15. At that time, a younger brother named Rifat called me. I have a big brother-little brother relationship with him. I often say many things to him in a mischievous way. I didn't know he was trapped there. I just said my normal words. I said it mischievously. But they recorded that video and spread false propaganda in my name. I want to make it clear: if anyone can provide even the minimum proof that I took money in that day's incident, I challenge that I will leave politics."

He further added, "Those at the higher levels of the administration, starting from DGFI and NSI, please thoroughly investigate the incident from the night of May 30. I know this incident was completely planned to damage my political career by trapping my little brother Rifat. My only request to the people of the country and the administration is to take action against the real culprits in the May 30 incident."

In the one-and-a-half-minute video that spread on Facebook, a person named Aftab Hossain Rifat is seen talking to Nizam Uddin on a Messenger call, which was recorded using another phone. At the start, Aftab Hossain says, 'If the Mir brothers don't stop the movement, what should we do then?' In response, Nizam Uddin says, 'I will stop the movement. Did they give it to you, give the money?' Aftab replies 'Yes' from his side.

When asked how many lakhs were given, Aftab says 'Five'. Then, Nizam Uddin is heard saying, 'Take more by applying pressure... See if you can take another five lakhs from them; if you can, I'll bring them and give some to Rohan and the Mirs.'

Leaders and activists of the organization have informed that Aftab Hossain, who spoke with Nizam Uddin, is the coordinator of the Chittagong port-centered anti-discrimination student movement.

When contacted, Nizam Uddin told Dhaka Post, 'After the NCP committee was formed, a planned conspiracy is being carried out against me. The person (Rifat) I spoke to is my little brother. He has given a statement. He was beaten and forced to call me. I didn't know at the time that Rifat was being detained and this was happening. I speak to him mischievously. Now, they are conspiring against me using that audio. Previously, allegations were brought against me, but they were proven false.'

Multiple attempts were made to contact Aftab
