A video confession by Jane Alam Apu, an expelled leader of the Democratic Student Parliament, has gone viral on social media, alleging the involvement of Advisor Asif Mahmud in an extortion incident at the residence of a former MP in Gulshan, Dhaka. However, Asif Mahmud has denied these allegations, asserting that he has no connection to the extortion case.
Speaking to journalists at the Secretariat on Thursday, August 14, 2025, Asif Mahmud addressed the claims. Regarding Jane Alam Apu’s video, he said, “I knew Jane Alam Apu in 2022. I haven’t met or spoken to him since August 5. I was quite surprised by these claims.”
Mahmud further stated, “I have no involvement in the extortion case. The allegations are politically motivated. It is being said that the statement from Apu was taken under duress.”
Responding to questions about resigning as an advisor and his political involvement, Mahmud said, “People often mention me, Mahfuz Bhai, or student advisors because of our prominence, but there are many others in this government with prior political affiliations. Some may still have them and might participate in politics or elections in the future. I believe everyone should resign before the election schedule is announced.”
He added, “I will resign myself because I intend to engage in politics. However, I haven’t decided yet whether I will contest elections. It’s also not finalized whether I will join the NCP after resigning.”
