A young man’s body was found hanging inside the lockup of Chakaria Police Station in Cox’s Bazar. The police recovered the body around 4:00 AM on Friday. According to the police, the youth committed suicide by hanging himself inside the lockup.
The deceased was identified as Durjoy Chowdhury (27), son of Kamal Chowdhury, a resident of Bhara Muhuri area in Chakaria Pourashava. He worked as an office assistant and computer operator at Chakaria Government High School.
Kamal Chowdhury, the father of the deceased, stated that on Thursday, the acting headteacher of Chakaria Government High School, Rabeya Khanom, handed Durjoy over to the police on allegations of cheque forgery and misappropriation of cash. He claimed that Durjoy had been under pressure for the past 10-12 days regarding these allegations, which caused him chest pain and breathing difficulties. On Thursday, Durjoy was called to the school, detained in a room until 5:00 PM, and later handed over to the police.
According to police sources, Rabeya Khanom filed a complaint at the police station on Thursday evening, accusing Durjoy of misappropriating Tk 2.83 lakh through cheque forgery and in cash. Following the complaint, the police detained Durjoy and placed him in the lockup.
Police further stated that Durjoy was seen walking inside the lockup until 1:27 AM. His movements were not observed afterward, and around 4:00 AM, police personnel found his body hanging.
When contacted, Rabeya Khanom, the acting headteacher, said, “Durjoy misappropriated Tk 2.83 lakh through cheque forgery and in cash. I filed a written complaint against him at the police station on Thursday evening, and he was with me during the filing. Later, the police detained him and placed him in the lockup. I left afterward. This morning, I heard that Durjoy committed suicide in the lockup. It’s a tragic incident.” She denied allegations of mistreatment or holding Durjoy hostage at the school.
Cox’s Bazar Additional Superintendent of Police Jasim Uddin Chowdhury said, “A youth named Durjoy Chowdhury committed suicide by hanging himself in the police lockup. His body has been sent to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy. A committee will be formed to investigate the incident.”
