Khagrachhari has been hit by flash floods caused by runoff from upstream hills, inundating low-lying areas of the municipality. Hundreds of homes in areas such as Lower Bazaar and Mehedibagh have been submerged.
On Saturday (September 6), continuous heavy rainfall in Panchhari and adjacent upstream areas led to a rapid rise in the water level of the Chengi River starting Sunday (September 7) morning, flooding low-lying areas. This sudden flooding has caused significant distress for residents.
Locals reported that after overnight rain, water levels began rising rapidly in the morning. Water entered homes quickly, damaging furniture and household items. Hundreds of families are now stranded due to the flooding.
Jahidul Islam, a resident of the Lower Bazaar area, said, “It rained for a few hours last night. When I came to my shop around 9 a.m., I saw water from the Chengi River approaching. Within an hour, water had entered the shop.”
Mohammad Mostafa Kamal, another resident of the same area, said, “This morning, a sudden surge of water from upstream entered our homes. The water level in the surrounding areas has risen to about three to four feet.”
Ismail Hossain from Mehedibagh said, “The sudden rise in water levels has damaged furniture. The entire Mehedibagh area is submerged, and the water is still rising.” The Lower Bazaar and Mehedibagh areas have been the hardest hit.
Khagrachhari Municipality Administrator Nazmun Ara Sultana told Dhaka Post, “Yesterday during the day and this morning, the sky was clear. However, heavy rainfall upstream caused this sudden flood. Efforts are underway to assess the damage and provide assistance as needed to the affected people.”
