Jamaat Leader Who Claimed ‘We Are Landlords’ Removed from Post Amid Chittagong University Clash*

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has removed Mohammad Sirajul Islam, the Amir of Hathazari Upazila, from his position following a controversial statement made during a clash at Chittagong University. The decision was made during an emergency meeting of the district working committee on Sunday, chaired by Mohammad Alauddin Sikder, the Amir of Chittagong North District. Fazlul Karim, Assistant Secretary of the Chittagong North District, confirmed the development at around 5:30 PM on Sunday.

A video of Mohammad Sirajul Islam’s statement went viral on social media, in which he was heard saying, “Chittagong University was established on our ancestral property. We are the owners of Chittagong University and its surrounding areas. We are landlords, and we will not tolerate any interference with landlords.” The statement sparked outrage, leading to protests by students on the university campus the following day. Fazlul Karim stated, “The organization considers this statement contrary to humility and believes it has tarnished the party’s image. We express regret for this. As a result, Mohammad Sirajul Islam has been relieved from his position as Hathazari Upazila Amir.” The controversy stemmed from a meeting held on Thursday evening at around 7:00 PM, organized by residents of Jobra village near the university, where Sirajul Islam made the remarks. He is also Jamaat-e-Islami’s nominated candidate for the Chittagong-5 (Hathazari) constituency, and a decision regarding his candidacy will be made by the party’s central council, according to party sources.
