Japan’s Prime Minister Ishiba Shigeru has decided to resign from his position. The announcement was reported by Japan’s public broadcaster NHK World on Sunday, September 7, 2025.
Ishiba assumed the role of Prime Minister in October of the previous year. Recently, his coalition, led by the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), lost its majority in the upper house of Japan’s parliament, leading to intense criticism from within his own party.
Speculation about Ishiba’s resignation surfaced just a week ago, which he had dismissed at the time. However, a week later, he finalized his decision to step down.
During his tenure, Ishiba promised to tackle inflation and bring reforms to the LDP. However, within months, the LDP and its coalition partner Komeito lost their majority in the lower house, followed by the upper house in July.
The LDP is scheduled to hold a special leadership selection on Monday. According to Al Jazeera, Ishiba’s resignation is aimed at preventing a potential split within the party.
