Ahead of this year’s Durga Puja, Home Adviser Lieutenant General (Retd.) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury has announced that gatherings involving alcohol or cannabis will not be permitted at puja mandaps. He stated that round-the-clock monitoring of puja mandaps will be ensured, with sufficient Ansar personnel deployed for security. The fairs typically held around puja venues, where alcohol and cannabis gatherings often take place, will not be allowed this time.
The adviser made these remarks on Monday (September 8) while speaking to journalists after a preparatory meeting for the upcoming Sharadiya Durga Puja. He further noted that the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) will be tasked with overseeing puja mandaps in border areas, while Ansar personnel will be deployed nationwide. He also emphasized that in Dhaka, idol immersion must follow a structured sequence to maintain order. Approximately 33,000 puja mandaps are set to be organized across the country.
The adviser added that the puja organizing committee has not expressed any concerns this year. Last year’s Durga Puja was celebrated peacefully, and this year’s celebrations are expected to be even more peaceful. More details to follow...
