Police have detained Rakibul Islam, alias Ratan (26), a suspect in the murder of a petrol pump officer in Bogura. The arrest was made by members of the Bogura District Police’s Detective Branch (DB) around 9:00 PM on Sunday, September 7, 2025, in the Mauchak area of Kaliakair Upazila, Gazipur.The Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Bogura DB, Iqbal Bahar, confirmed the detention, stating that Rakibul confessed to killing Iqbal Hossain, the manager of Shatabdi Filling Station, by striking him with a hammer while he was asleep in the early hours of Saturday. After the murder, Rakibul fled Bogura and went into hiding in Kaliakair. He claimed to police that he committed the murder to take revenge for being falsely accused of stealing fuel and being beaten.
The incident occurred late Saturday night at the filling station’s office in the Dattabari area of Bogura city. Police recovered the body around 10:30 AM on Sunday and sent it to the morgue of Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital in Bogura.
Police have retrieved CCTV footage of the incident, which shows Iqbal being killed with a hammer in less than 20 seconds while he was asleep. The victim, Iqbal Hossain, was a resident of Pipulbaria village in Sirajganj Sadar, while the suspect, Rakibul Islam, hails from Nishchintapur in Shajahanpur Upazila, Bogura.
Bogura Sadar Police Station OC Hasan Basir stated that preparations are underway to file a murder case in connection with the incident.
