Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s (DMP) Banani Police Station has arrested two individuals on charges of defrauding multiple students by promising to provide IELTS exam questions and answers in exchange for money.
The arrested individuals are Panna Punam Haoladar, alias Keya (26), and Md. Mamun Khan (37).
Deputy Commissioner (DC) of DMP’s Media and Public Relations Division, Muhammad Talebur Rahman, confirmed the arrests on Sunday, September 7. The arrests were made during a raid at Amazon Lily Lake View Residence, a residential hotel in Banani, around 9:30 PM on Saturday.
During the operation, police recovered Tk 8.38 lakh in cash, obtained through fraudulent means, and eight mobile phones from the suspects.
According to DC Talebur Rahman, citing Banani Police Station, the victim, Md. Nadit Hasan Rocky, was enrolled at Queen Global Consultant and IELTS institute. Through this institute, the suspects contacted Rocky and other candidates, offering to supply IELTS exam questions and answers to ensure success. Trusting their promises, Rocky agreed to pay Tk 1.8 lakh. Later, he discovered that the suspects had collected between Tk 1 lakh and Tk 3 lakh from each candidate.
On September 5, Rocky and his friend Tabibul Islam, along with other candidates, met the suspects at Amazon Lily Lake View Residence in Banani and handed over the money. That night, the suspects provided some question papers and answers. However, at the exam center, Rocky found that only a few questions matched the provided answers. After the exam, when the victims returned to the hotel and demanded a refund, the suspects refused and issued various threats.
Following a case filed against them, police conducted an in-depth investigation, analyzed information, and used technology to track the suspects. A raid was conducted on Saturday night at the Amazon Lily Lake View Residence, leading to their arrest.
Legal proceedings against the arrested individuals are underway, DC Talebur Rahman added.
