In a horrific incident in Jazira Upazila, Shariatpur, a young man was brutally beaten, resulting in broken hands and legs, and his eyes were gouged out, rendering him blind. The incident occurred on Saturday (September 6) afternoon in Mohar Ali Shikdar Kandi village. The victim, Ramzan Molla (38), has been sent to Dhaka for advanced medical treatment.
Ramzan Molla, a resident of Dakshin Baiksha in Jazira Municipality, is the son of Shafi Molla. It is alleged that Suman Shikdar, a resident of Mohar Ali Shikdar Kandi village, led a group of accomplices in perpetrating the attack. Enraged by the incident, locals set fire to Suman’s house, destroying three homes and two shops. The fire was later brought under control by the Fire Service.
According to sources from the Padma Setu South Police Station, Suman Shikdar is known in the area as a drug dealer and has at least 20 cases against him related to drugs and theft across various police stations. On Saturday afternoon, Ramzan Molla was attacked in a garden near Suman’s house, where his hands and legs were broken, and his eyes were gouged out with a sharp weapon, leaving him blind. Local residents, upon learning of the incident, chased Suman and his accomplices, apprehending one individual named Shajahan and handing him over to the police. Ramzan was rescued and taken to the Jazira Upazila Health Complex.
Dr. Tanvir Ahmed, a doctor at the health complex, confirmed that both of Ramzan’s eyes were completely destroyed, rendering him permanently blind. His hands and right leg were also fractured. After receiving primary treatment, he was referred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for advanced care.
Eyewitnesses reported that an enraged mob gathered and set fire to Suman Shikdar’s house, burning three homes and two shops by 5 PM. Two units of the Jazira Fire Service responded to the scene but were initially obstructed by locals. The fire was eventually brought under control around 3 PM with assistance from the army.
Jafar Sheikh, an officer at the Jazira Fire Service, stated that they received a call about the fire at noon but were prevented from extinguishing it by the agitated crowd. With the army’s support, firefighting efforts began at 3 PM. The extent of the damage is yet to be assessed.
Liton Byapari, a neighbor of Suman, said, “I was at my workplace in Jazira Upazila headquarters when I heard about the incident from my family. I rushed to the scene and saw hundreds of people surrounding Suman’s house, which was set ablaze. The fire destroyed three homes and two shops. With the army’s help, the Fire Service brought it under control. I heard that Suman led the attack that left a man’s hands, legs, and eyes destroyed, which infuriated locals and led to the arson.”
Ramzan’s father-in-law, Tota Miya Sheikh, said, “My son-in-law lives with his wife and daughter in our village. Yesterday, he left home saying he was going to Atarshi Darbar Sharif. Today at noon, we learned that his hands and legs were broken, and his eyes were destroyed. We heard Suman Shikdar was behind this, but we don’t know what enmity he had with my son-in-law.”
The Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Padma Setu South Police Station, Parvez Ahmed, said, “Following allegations that Suman Shikdar and his accomplices blinded a youth and broke his hands and legs, locals set fire to Suman’s house. Suman is an accused in multiple drug and theft cases, with around 20 cases against him, though we are still verifying this. One suspect was detained by locals and is now in police custody. A case will be filed, and the suspect will be sent to court. The police have launched an investigation into the incident.”
