Dhaka, April 25, 2025
To ensure a steady gas supply for the country’s industrial sector, the government has decided to establish a land-based Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) terminal, announced Shafiqul Alam, Press Secretary to the Chief Adviser, on Thursday, April 24, 2025, during a press briefing in Doha, Qatar.
Speaking to journalists, Shafiqul highlighted the challenges faced by industries due to gas shortages, which have hindered factory setups. “We aim to set up a land-based LNG terminal as soon as possible to facilitate sufficient gas imports from abroad,” he said, according to a report by BSS.
The announcement came during Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus’s visit to Doha, where discussions were held with Qatar Energy regarding the LNG terminal project. Shafiqul described the visit as successful, expressing optimism that it would enhance Bangladesh’s global reputation and attract foreign investors.
Addressing the country’s economic progress, the Press Secretary noted that the interim government has significantly reduced the national debt from USD 320 billion during the previous regime to USD 60 billion. He added that the remaining debt is expected to be cleared within months, signaling Bangladesh’s readiness for business and investment.
Concluding his four-day visit to Qatar, Professor Yunus departed for Rome, Italy, on Friday to attend the funeral of Pope Francis.
