Dhaka Tops Global Air Pollution Rankings

April 20, 2025:  According to IQAir, a Swiss-based air quality monitoring website, Dhaka has ranked first among the world's most polluted cities today. The city's Air Quality Index (AQI) score stands at 176, categorizing it as unhealthy.

Global Air Pollution Rankings

Following Dhaka, Karachi (168) and Lahore (159) of Pakistan secured the second and third spots, while Kathmandu (158) of Nepal and Beijing (155) of China** ranked fourth and fifth.

The World Health Organization (WHO) warns that air pollution contributes to stroke, heart disease, lung cancer, and respiratory infections. The AQI scale defines air quality as:

- **0-50**: Good

- **51-100**: Moderate

- **101-150**: Unhealthy for sensitive groups

- **151-200**: Unhealthy for all

- **201-300**: Very unhealthy

- **301+**: Hazardous

To combat air pollution, the Bangladesh government is implementing measures such as: Spraying water to control road dust, Promoting eco-friendly fuel, Regulating industrial emissions, Installing new air quality monitoring stations.

This alarming situation calls for urgent action to improve air quality and protect public health. What are your thoughts on the government's initiatives?
