The government is taking steps to boost domestic gas production and reduce reliance on imports. In today's Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) meeting, two major projects will be proposed—‘Drilling of Two Deep Exploration Wells in Titas and Bakhrabad Fields’ and ‘Enhancing and Strengthening the Geological Survey Department’s Drilling Capacity.’ The total cost of these projects is estimated at BDT 9.2 billion.
Currently, Bangladesh’s daily gas demand stands at 4,500 million cubic feet, while supply is limited to 2,700 million cubic feet. Domestic production accounts for 1,700–1,800 million cubic feet, with 900–1,000 million cubic feet being imported, leaving a 1,500 million cubic feet shortage. To address this issue, the government is opting for increased production through deep drilling and geological survey enhancements.
Additionally, 14 projects across 8 ministries** will be presented for approval, including the Bay Terminal in Chattogram, the largest among them. With an estimated cost of BDT 35 billion, this terminal is expected to be a game-changer for Bangladesh’s economy, significantly boosting port operations.
