National Desk : The International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol) has issued a Red Notice against former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Benazir Ahmed.
The notice was officially issued on April 10, following allegations of financial corruption and criminal offenses.
Sources at Bangladesh Police Headquarters confirm that the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) submitted a request to a Dhaka court, which subsequently ordered the necessary steps for issuing the Red Notice against Benazir.
Following this directive, the National Central Bureau (NCB) of Bangladesh Police formally applied to Interpol, leading to the notice's issuance.
Reports indicate that Benazir Ahmed is accused of involvement in financial crimes and other illegal activities, prompting swift action by Interpol to track his whereabouts internationally. However, the notice has not yet been published on Interpol’s official website. Once his location is identified, the notice will be made publicly accessible.
Additionally, Interpol has confirmed the issuance of the notice via email to Bangladesh Police. Meanwhile, communication has taken place with Interpol regarding former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and 11 other individuals in three separate instances, involving official correspondence and a virtual meeting.
Exper state that Interpol’s Red Notice is typically reserved for serious offenses, allowing member states to cooperate in tracking and apprehending individuals accused of significant crimes across international borders.
