Iran Offers Mediation to Ease Pakistan-India Tensions

International Desk, April 25, 2025
Iran has proposed to mediate between Pakistan and India to de-escalate tensions sparked by the killing of 26 people in Jammu and Kashmir. On Friday, April 25, Iran’s Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi extended the offer, emphasizing the deep cultural and historical ties Iran shares with both nations. “India and Pakistan are brotherly neighbors to Iran. We enjoy relations rooted in centuries-old cultural civilizations. Like other neighbors, we consider them a top priority. Through our embassies in Islamabad and New Delhi, we aim to foster greater understanding between the two countries during this challenging time,” Araghchi stated.
In a post on the microblogging platform X, Araghchi quoted Persian poet Saadi: “Humanity is one family; if one member suffers, the others remain uneasy.” The offer comes amid heightened tensions following a deadly armed attack in Pehelgam, Jammu and Kashmir, on Tuesday. India has accused Pakistan of indirect involvement, leading New Delhi to announce the cancellation of the Indus Water Treaty, suspension of all visa facilities for Pakistanis, and closure of the main border crossing. In retaliation, Pakistan imposed a ban on Indian aircraft entering its airspace, closed border crossings, and suspended visa facilities for Indian citizens.
On Friday, India’s Water Resources Minister declared measures to ensure “not a single drop” of Indus River water reaches Pakistan. In response, Pakistan warned on Thursday that any attempt to block water flow would be considered an act of war, and appropriate measures would be taken.
