Cumilla: A love triangle in Cumilla’s Bhauksar village triggered a day-long spree of violence, vandalism, and arson on Wednesday, April 23. The chaos unfolded in BhaTrimuksar Union of Barura Upazila, targeting the home of Abdul Jalil, a local farmer and Krishak Dal leader.
According to local residents, the conflict stemmed from a romantic entanglement involving Abdul Jalil’s son, Jihadul Islam (20), his wife Jannatul Mawya (18), and a distant relative, Shihab, from Tala village in Barura Pourashava. Jihad and Jannatul met on Facebook, fell in love, and married six months ago. After their marriage, Jihad moved to Dhaka for work, leaving Jannatul in Bhauksar. During this period, Shihab initiated contact with Jannatul via Messenger, eventually proposing marriage, which she rejected.
Three months ago, Jihad asked Shihab to help arrange transportation for Jannatul to visit her father’s home in Adda village. Shihab allegedly exploited the situation, confiscating Jannatul’s mobile phone and threatening her, demanding she marry him to get it back. Jannatul informed Jihad, who returned to Cumilla to confront Shihab.
On Wednesday, Jihad and his friend Rakib lured Shihab to a secluded location under the pretense of Jannatul agreeing to elope with him. When Shihab arrived, Jihad and Rakib detained him and attempted to assault him. The situation escalated when Jihad’s cousin, Sagar, intervened, urging a peaceful resolution. Rakib, ignoring Sagar’s plea, slapped him, prompting Sagar to retaliate. Enraged, Rakib called in reinforcements from nearby Galimpur village, leading to a mob of 100–150 armed individuals storming Jihad’s home.
The mob vandalized Abdul Jalil’s house, broke the balcony grille, and attempted to set fire to a haystack late Wednesday night. Locals reported calling the national emergency hotline (999) at noon, but police arrived only at night, allowing the attackers to flee. Police detained Shihab, while Sagar escaped to safety.
Barura Police Station Officer-in-Charge Kazi Nazmul Haque confirmed that forces were dispatched upon receiving reports of the attack. “No written complaint has been filed yet, but we’ll take action against those involved once a case is lodged,” he told Dhaka Post. He assured full cooperation if the victims file a complaint.
The incident has left the village in shock, with Abdul Jalil’s family preparing legal action to seek justice for the destruction and trauma inflicted on their home.
