126th Birth Anniversary of National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam Celebrated

 

Dhaka, May 25, 2025 : Today, the 126th birth anniversary of Kazi Nazrul Islam, the iconic poet of equality, love, and rebellion, is being celebrated on the 11th of Jaistha. Born on this day in 1899 in Churulia village, Bardhaman district of West Bengal, Nazrul rose from humble beginnings as ‘Dukhu Mia’ to become the revered ‘Rebel Poet’ of Bengali literature.  

The day is being marked with various programs across the country. The University of Dhaka has organized a tribute at the poet’s mausoleum, where Vice-Chancellor Professor Niaz Ahmed Khan will lead teachers, students, and staff in offering floral wreaths and reciting Fatiha.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Cultural Affairs, Shilpakala Academy, and Cumilla District Administration have jointly arranged a three-day event from May 25 to May 27 at the Cumilla Shilpakala Academy. The inaugural ceremony, starting at 3:00 PM today, will feature Cultural Affairs Ministry Advisor Mostafa Sarwar Faruqi, Executive Director of Kazi Nazrul Islam Institute Md. Latiful Islam Shibly, and the poet’s granddaughter Khilkhil Kazi, Chairperson of the Kazi Nazrul Islam Institute Trust Board. Professor Salimullah Khan will deliver a memorial lecture, while Cumilla District Administrator Md. Amirul Kaisar will give the welcome address. The event will also include the presentation of the ‘Nazrul Award 2023 and 2024’.
Nazrul, known as the poet of love, rebellion, humanity, and equality, penned numerous poems, songs, stories, and novels against imperialism, fascism, oppression, and inequality. In 1922, he published the magazine Dhumketu, and his poem Anandamoyir Agomone led to a year of rigorous imprisonment. In his 22-year literary career, he created around 4,000 songs, countless poems, short stories, and novels. Beyond literature, he ventured into music, filmmaking, and acting, and even participated in World War I.
In 1972, Nazrul was brought to independent Bangladesh with his family and honored as the National Poet. He passed away on August 29, 1976, and was laid to rest beside the Dhaka University Central Mosque as per his wishes.
Nazrul’s timeless works continue to inspire resistance against injustice and oppression, remaining profoundly relevant in today’s turbulent times.
