BNP’s Salahuddin Ahmed Disappointed Over Lack of Election Assurances

Dhaka, May 24, 2025 – Salahuddin Ahmed, a member of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party’s (BNP) Standing Committee, expressed frustration over the absence of concrete assurances regarding the upcoming national election. Speaking to reporters after a meeting with the Chief Adviser at the state guest house Yamuna on Saturday night, he highlighted the lack of clarity on the election timeline.

When asked about specific commitments from the Chief Adviser, Salahuddin, visibly agitated, said, “No specific assurances were given. We presented our demands, and we will wait for their press to communicate further.” He added that the BNP would respond only after the Chief Adviser’s office issues an official statement, stating, “Let their press speak first.”
Salahuddin reiterated the party’s demand for the removal of the Security Adviser and two student advisers, whose presence, he claimed, undermines the interim government’s neutrality. “We have raised this demand in writing and verbally, both previously and today,” he said. When asked if any assurances were provided, he noted, “They said they would look into it.”
Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, another BNP Standing Committee member, said the discussions focused on reforms, justice, and elections. He noted agreement on implementing reforms through consensus and ensuring justice through the judiciary. “It is possible to hold elections even before December,” he said, adding that no objections were raised on this point.
Abdul Moyeen Khan, another senior BNP leader, emphasized the urgency of holding elections to address the deteriorating law and order situation. “We clearly stated that an election announcement would restore peace, order, and democracy in Bangladesh,” he said.
The BNP also demanded the reconstitution of the Advisory Council, excluding controversial figures, to ensure impartiality. The party continues to advocate for a transparent and timely election to stabilize the country’s political landscape.
