Coal-Carrying Ship Stranded on Anowara Coast Amid Rough Seas

Chattogram | May 30, 2025 : A coal-carrying lighter ship named ‘Navimar-3’ has run aground on a sandbar in the Gahira area of the Bay of Bengal near Anowara, Chattogram, due to strong tidal surges triggered by a low-pressure system. The incident occurred on Thursday (May 29) night at the Uthan Mazhir Ghat area in Raypur Union. On Friday (May 30) morning, members of the Coast Guard Sangu Station took control of the situation to secure the vessel.

According to reports, a low-pressure system in the Bay of Bengal caused rough seas, accompanied by heavy winds and rainfall. The resulting tidal surge and stormy weather led to the ship becoming stranded on the sandbar. Locals reported that the water levels began rising from Thursday afternoon, and strong winds exacerbated the situation by nightfall.
The ship’s watchman, Miskatur Rahman, said, “We were returning after unloading coal at the Gandamara coal power plant in Banshkhali when we were caught in the storm. The tidal surge pushed the ship onto the sandbar.” He added that the vessel belongs to a Dubai-based company and regularly transports coal to the power plant.
Rezaul Karim Faruqi, the khatib of Uthan Mazhir Ghat Jame Mosque, expressed concern, stating, “The ship got stuck around 2 a.m. If it’s not removed soon, the waves could damage the mosque and nearby graveyard.”
Coast Guard Sangu Station’s CC Animesh Roy confirmed, “We reached the site around 11 a.m. on Friday, dispersed the curious crowd, and took charge of securing the vessel.”
Mohammad Abdul Hannan, assistant meteorologist at Cox’s Bazar Weather Office, reported that 92 mm of rainfall was recorded in the 24 hours until noon on Thursday. He noted that similar weather conditions may persist for the next two days.
The stranded ship was empty of cargo, but the incident drew crowds of curious onlookers on Friday morning. Authorities are taking necessary steps to salvage the vessel.
