Dhaka, May 30, 2025: A Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Court on Thursday ordered the imprisonment of retired Jagannath University professor S M Anwara Begum in connection with an attempted murder case linked to the July mass uprising. The information was confirmed by her lawyer, Obaidul Islam, to Prothom Alo.
Court sources stated that Anwara Begum was arrested in a case filed by Sujan Molla, former general secretary of the Jagannath University unit of Bangladesh Chhatra League, accusing her of attempted murder. The police presented her in court and requested her detention, while the defense sought bail.
The defense lawyers argued that Anwara Begum, who served as a professor at Jagannath University for 35 years and retired in 2021, was not involved in any political activities post-retirement. They claimed the case was filed to harass her and assured the court she would not flee if granted bail. However, after hearing both sides, the court rejected the bail plea and ordered her detention.
According to the case details, on July 19, 2024, during the anti-discrimination student-public movement near Raysaheb Bazar’s Star Hotel in Dhaka, shots were fired at protesters. The complaint alleges that Awami League-affiliated teachers at Jagannath University instigated Chhatra League leaders and activists to carry out the attack. Sujan Molla, the complainant, sustained a bullet injury to his left eye, resulting in severe bleeding. He filed the case at Sutrapur Police Station on February 16.
The investigating officer, Sub-Inspector A K M Hasan Mahmudul Kabir of Sutrapur Police Station, submitted a written statement to the court confirming Anwara Begum’s involvement in the incident. According to the Officer-in-Charge of Sutrapur Police Station, Saiful Islam, students detained Anwara Begum near Jagannath University on Wednesday evening and handed her over to the police.
Anwara Begum, a freedom fighter, previously served as a professor in the Political Science Department at Jagannath University and was a member of the Bangladesh Public Service Commission (BPSC).
