Historic Girls’ School in Crisis Due to Teacher Shortage: Students and Parents Demand Action

30 May 2025 : On Thursday, May 29, a visit to the school revealed that students have been unable to attend regular classes for nearly six months due to a critical shortage of teachers. The school is meant to have 11 teachers, including a headteacher, assistant headteacher, and others, but currently employs only three.

Assistant Headteacher Sabita Sarkar emphasized the urgent need to address the teacher shortage, particularly by appointing female teachers for this girls’ school. She added that her retirement in two months will further complicate the situation.

School sources indicate that the shortage resulted from the headteacher’s retirement, the transfer of three teachers, and one teacher attending B.Ed. training. With approximately 300 students in grades six to ten, the lack of regular classes has led to a significant drop in attendance. Last month, the school authorities applied to the Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education to fill the vacant positions. The school also lacks an office assistant, and teaching is currently managed by just one senior teacher and one assistant teacher.
During the visit, it was observed that with only two teachers handling classes, students in other classrooms were left idle. Students expressed concerns about their future and demanded immediate teacher appointments. Parents voiced their frustration, stating that the teacher shortage and irregular classes are causing their children to lose interest in studies.
The school’s president and Upazila Executive Officer, Monira Khatun, said she learned of the issue during a recent SSC examination center visit, as neither teachers nor parents had previously informed her. She assured that she would coordinate with the District Secondary Education Office to address the crisis promptly. Upazila Secondary Education Officer Khandaker Maksudur Rahman stated that teacher appointments for government secondary schools are handled by the District Education Office, and he would inform them accordingly.
