Dhaka, May 18, 2025 : The teachers’ organization Sada Dal at Dhaka University (DU) has issued a 48-hour ultimatum to authorities, demanding justice for the murder of Shahriar Alam Siam, a student of the Institute of Education and Research (IER) and the Literary and Publication Secretary of the Sir AF Rahman Hall unit of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal. The ultimatum was announced during a human chain organized on Sunday (May 18) at 11:30 AM at the base of the Aparajeyo Bangla sculpture on the DU campus.
During the human chain, Sada Dal Convener Professor Dr. Morshed Hasan Khan stated, “Siam was not just killed; he was murdered. Five days have passed, yet the real culprits remain unidentified. We strongly demand that the university administration and the Home Ministry identify the actual perpetrators within the next 48 hours. If this demand is not met, we will be forced to launch a tougher movement.” He further accused a group of attempting to divert the motive behind Siam’s murder, emphasizing that justice for the killing must come first before any other discussions.
Professor Dr. ABM Obaidul Islam, Vice-Chancellor of Bangladesh Open University, remarked, “For a teacher, a student’s lifeless body is an unbearable burden and deeply painful. Is our campus truly safe? We demand a secure campus where no student has to lose their life.” Expressing national shame, he admitted his failure to fulfill his responsibilities as a citizen and educator.
Professor Md. Lutfar Rahman, Pro-Vice-Chancellor of the National University, said, “As a DU teacher, I am ashamed. Why should our children lose their lives at the hands of others? It is our responsibility to make the campus safe.” He criticized the government for failing to ensure security and warned that teachers would take to the streets if justice for Siam’s murder is not initiated.
The human chain was attended by other prominent teachers, including Sada Dal Joint Convener Professor Dr. Abdus Salam, Professor Dr. Md. Abul Kalam Sarkar, Dean of the Faculty of Arts Professor Dr. Siddiqur Rahman Khan, and Professor Dr. Mahiuddin from the Institute of Business Administration (IBA).
On the night of May 13, Shahriar Alam Siam was fatally stabbed by unidentified assailants in Suhrawardy Udyan following an altercation sparked by a motorcycle collision. Although police have arrested three individuals in connection with the case, the main perpetrators remain at large.
