Dhaka, May 18, 2025: Supporters of BNP leader Engineer Ishraq Hossain, along with BNP and its affiliate organizations, have been protesting for the fourth consecutive day outside Nagar Bhaban, demanding that Ishraq be sworn in as the mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC). On Sunday, they announced a new program, declaring a blockade of Nagar Bhaban and its surrounding areas starting Monday (May 19) at 11 AM.
Former secretary Mashiur Rahman announced the blockade during the ongoing sit-in at Nagar Bhaban. He stated, “Tomorrow, from 11 AM to 3 PM, we will stay here to halt Nagar Bhaban’s operations. The blockade program will continue.”
Earlier, starting at 9 AM, Ishraq’s supporters gathered in front of Nagar Bhaban to press their demand for handing over the mayoral responsibilities to him. Around noon, they held a protest march from Nagar Bhaban through Gulistan, the Secretariat, the National Press Club, and the Education Bhaban before returning to Nagar Bhaban to resume their sit-in.
The protesters chanted slogans such as “No more delays in oath-taking,” “We demand Ishraq Hossain’s oath immediately,” and “People’s mayor Ishraq Bhai, no other mayor will do.” Due to the protests, service activities at Nagar Bhaban have remained suspended. DSCC Chief Executive Officer Md. Zillur Rahman said, “I am trying to go to the office, but I cannot enter. As a result, official work, especially paperwork, cannot be completed.”
The agitators allege that the delay in Ishraq’s oath-taking is due to the actions of the law advisor and the local government advisor. They further claim that the interim government is disrespecting the court by not implementing the verdict declaring Ishraq as mayor.
Notably, on March 27, the First Joint District Judge and Electoral Tribunal of Dhaka declared Ishraq Hossain as the DSCC mayor. On April 22, the Election Commission sought advice from the Ministry of Law regarding the publication of a gazette, and on April 27, it officially published a gazette announcing Ishraq Hossain as the new mayor of DSCC.
