Farakka Long March Day: Abdul Moyeen Khan Demands Cancellation of Unequal Treaties with India

Dhaka, May 16, 2025: At a multi-party public rally held at the Central Shaheed Minar on Friday to mark Farakka Long March Day, BNP Standing Committee Member Dr. Abdul Moyeen Khan demanded the cancellation of all unequal treaties signed with Indian hegemonists.

He stressed the need to build resistance across the board to counter India’s water aggression policy. The event was jointly organized by the International Farakka Committee (IFC) and the Bangladesh Farakka Committee.

The rally was attended by Dr. Abdul Moyeen Khan as the chief guest and Syed Tipu Sultan, Chairman of IFC, New York, as the special guest. Other notable attendees included BNP Central Committee Member Mir Sarafat Ali Sapu, Ganasanghati Andolan Chief Coordinator Zonayed Saki, Nagorik Oikya President Mahmudur Rahman Manna, and former Vice-Chancellor of Jahangirnagar University Professor Jasim Uddin Ahmed, among leaders from various political parties and organizations.
Dr. Abdul Moyeen Khan stated that the Indian government has violated international water-sharing agreements by constructing 54 illegal dams on 36 transboundary rivers shared with Bangladesh. As a result, Bangladesh’s rivers are drying up, turning regions into deserts during the dry season, affecting farmers’ ability to cultivate crops, and threatening biodiversity and the climate. During the monsoon, India opens dam gates, causing devastating floods in Bangladesh. He called for widespread protests to resist India’s water aggression.
BNP leader Mir Sarafat Ali Sapu recalled the historic Farakka Long March of 1976, led by Maulana Bhasani, which saw lakhs of people march toward Farakka. He noted that martyred President Ziaur Rahman had raised the issue at the United Nations. Sapu vowed that Bangladesh would secure its fair share of water, if necessary, through international courts or even war.
Maulana Bhasani’s grandson, Azad Khan Bhasani, declared, “We will not accept Delhi’s slavery. We will fight, even wage war if needed, to secure our rightful share of water.” The rally urged the Indian government, led by Prime Minister Modi, to dismantle the environmentally destructive Farakka Barrage and other illegal dams, ensuring Bangladesh receives its fair share of wate.
