DNCC to Begin Tree Plantation in June to Green Dhaka

Dhaka, May 16, 2025: To make Dhaka city greener and more environmentally friendly during the upcoming monsoon season, the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) will commence a large-scale tree plantation program starting June 1.

This information was confirmed by DNCC sources on Friday, May 16. A meeting regarding this initiative was held earlier at the DNCC Nagar Bhaban.

During the meeting, DNCC Administrator Mohammad Ejaz issued directives to officials, stating, “From June 1, we must begin extensive tree plantation and development work across Dhaka’s canals, lakes, open spaces, and fields.” He noted that the landscape architecture for the city has already been completed, and trees will be planted along canals and lakes based on the advice of botanists. Ejaz called for collaboration with all stakeholders to ensure the success of these initiatives.
According to DNCC sources, volunteers have been assigned to maintain and green 33 canals in Dhaka by planting trees along their banks. Additionally, one gardener has been appointed for every kilometer of canal to oversee tree planting and maintenance. Administrator Ejaz highlighted that, in the past, over 100 crore taka was spent on canal dredging with little visible impact. In contrast, the current effort to clean 100 kilometers of canals is costing less than 10 crore taka.
Through this initiative, DNCC aims to enhance Dhaka’s environment and play a significant role in combating the effects of climate.
