Dhaka, May 16, 2025: The government has agreed to fulfill the demands of Jagannath University (JnU) students, as confirmed by Professor SMA Faiz, Chairman of the University Grants Commission (UGC).
On Friday evening, Professor Faiz visited the protest site, announced the government's decision, and broke the students' hunger strike by offering them water.
Professor Faiz stated that the government has accepted the students’ demands, and the university authorities will hold a formal briefing at 8 PM to provide further details. Earlier, a meeting was held between the government and relevant stakeholders, where decisions were made to increase the university’s operational budget, construct temporary halls to address accommodation issues, and expedite the completion of the second campus.
On Friday, at 3:45 PM, students began a mass hunger strike at Kakrail Mor to press for their demands. Students from various departments participated in groups. The hunger strike was announced at a rally organized by JnU Unity at 3 PM, led by Mahtab Limon, General Secretary of the Jagannath University Journalists’ Association. Around 5,000 current and former students attended the rally.
The students’ movement and the government’s response have been viewed by many as a positive step for the education sector.
