Dhaka, May 23, 2025: Mohammad Rashed Khan, General Secretary of Gonoadhikar Parishad, has alleged that the rumor of the Chief Advisor’s resignation was a staged drama to divert public attention from the demand for the resignation of advisors supported by the National Citizen Party (NCP).
He made these remarks during a protest rally organized by Bangladesh Jubo Adhikar Parishad, an affiliate of Gonoadhikar Parishad, on Friday (May 23) afternoon in front of Alrazi Complex in Purana Paltan. The rally demanded the resignation of advisors Asif Mahmud and Mahfuz Alam, as well as the removal and arrest of Dhaka North City Corporation Administrator Mohammad Ejaz.
Rashed Khan stated that the rumor about Chief Advisor Dr. Muhammad Yunus’s resignation was spread the previous day, but he is not resigning. He clarified that Dr. Yunus, upset with the behavior of NCP’s advisors and leaders, had warned them to act with restraint or he would step down. However, NCP distorted this warning, spreading the narrative that the Chief Advisor was resigning, only to later claim he would stay. Khan alleged that this was a deliberate tactic to shift focus from the demand for NCP advisors’ resignation.
He accused Advisor Mahfuz Alam of creating chaos and disunity in the name of reforms and Advisor Asif Mahmud of being involved in corruption. Khan urged the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) to arrest the culprits rather than merely summoning them. He also questioned how a person associated with a banned organization became an administrator, demanding that Asif Mahmud provide an explanation.
Khan emphasized that Gonoadhikar Parishad does not want Dr. Muhammad Yunus to resign and has full confidence in his leadership. However, he called for a reorganization of the advisory council, arguing that the current team is ineffective. He demanded the announcement of the national election schedule by September and the holding of elections by December.
Faruk Hasan, spokesperson for Gonoadhikar Parishad, stated that Asif Mahmud and Mahfuz Alam have violated their oaths and must resign. He accused them of attempting to tarnish Dr. Yunus’s reputation through political mismanagement. Manjur Morshed Mamun, President of Bangladesh Jubo Adhikar Parishad, said that to uphold the spirit of the July movement and maintain national unity, the resignation of these advisors is essential. He warned that failure to comply would lead to a program to besiege the Dhaka North City Corporation.
The rally was attended by Mizanur Rahman, President of Dhaka North Gonoadhikar Parishad; Advocate Nazim Uddin, General Secretary of Dhaka South Gonoadhikar Parishad; Abdur Rahman, President of Shramik Adhikar Parishad; Rahul Islam, President of Dhaka North Jubo Adhikar Parishad; Hosain Nur, General Secretary of Dhaka North Jubo Adhikar Parishad; Jahangir Hiron, President of Dhaka South Jubo Adhikar Parishad; Obaydur Rahman Shubho, General Secretary of Dhaka South Jubo Adhikar Parishad; and Mujahidul Islam, Senior Joint General Secretary. The event was moderated by Muntazul Islam, Organizational Secretary of Jubo Adhikar Parishad.
