Dhaka, May 25, 2025: The employees’ union of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) and supporters of BNP leader Ishraq Hossain have been observing a work stoppage and sit-in protest for the tenth consecutive day, demanding that Ishraq be sworn in as mayor and assume his responsibilities. The ongoing agitation has effectively halted all operations at Nagar Bhavan, leaving citizens deprived of essential services.
On Sunday morning, after 10 AM, employees and supporters gathered at the Nagar Bhavan premises, raising slogans demanding that Ishraq be entrusted with the mayor’s duties. The protesters assert that “Nagar Bhavan cannot function without a mayor.” Munir Hossain, a supporter, stated, “We will not return home until Ishraq Hossain is seated as mayor. Our movement will continue.”
When asked about the disruption of public services, protester Abdul Kaiyum said, “Our protest is not causing inconvenience. Those who are failing to administer Ishraq’s oath are responsible for this situation.” DSCC employee Afroza Haque added, “The court’s verdict must be implemented. The people of Dhaka want Ishraq Hossain as mayor. We will resume work once the government administers his oath.”
The main entrance and other entry points of Nagar Bhavan remain locked, with only a side pocket gate allowing limited access. Service seekers are being turned away. Salahuddin, a resident of Wari, said, “I’ve been coming for days to correct my daughter’s birth registration, but the office is closed, and I can’t get the work done.”
On February 1, 2020, the DSCC election saw Awami League’s Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh declared the winner. Ishraq Hossain filed a case on March 3, 2020, alleging irregularities. On March 27, 2025, Dhaka’s First Joint District Judge and Election Tribunal Judge Md. Nurul Islam annulled Taposh’s victory and declared Ishraq the mayor. The Election Commission published a gazette on April 27. However, a writ petition filed on May 14 by Supreme Court lawyer Md. Mamunur Rashid sought to prevent Ishraq’s oath-taking. The High Court dismissed the writ on Thursday, May 22.
Local Government Division Secretary Md. Rezaul Maksud Jahedi said, “We have received the court’s verdict, and there is an obligation to administer the oath by May 26. We are in discussions, and a resolution will come soon.” He indicated that the oath-taking is likely to occur on Monday.
