Dhaka, 23 May 2025: Nahid Islam, the convener of the National Citizens’ Party (NCP), has revealed that Professor Muhammad Yunus, the Chief Adviser of Bangladesh’s interim government, is contemplating resignation. Nahid met with Professor Yunus on Thursday (22 May) evening at the state guesthouse Yamuna to discuss the matter.
Nahid Islam stated, “We have been hearing rumors about the Chief Adviser’s resignation since morning. I met him to discuss the ongoing situation and these reports.” He added that Professor Yunus expressed concerns about his ability to function effectively under the current circumstances, saying, “If I cannot work effectively in this environment, where I’m being held hostage and political parties fail to reach a common ground, what’s the point of staying?”
Nahid urged Professor Yunus not to resign, emphasizing the aspirations of the July mass uprising and the need for national unity. He said, “Considering the goals of the uprising, national security, and the country’s future, we hope he remains steadfast and works with all political parties in unity.” However, Nahid noted that if political parties fail to provide confidence and support, Professor Yunus might decide to step down.
On the same day, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) demanded the resignation or removal of two interim government advisers, Mahfuz Alam and Asif Mahmud, along with National Security Adviser Khalilur Rahman. In response, a senior NCP leader labeled three interim government advisers—Law Adviser Professor Asif Nazrul, Finance Adviser Salehuddin Ahmed, and Planning Adviser Dr. Wahid Uddin Mahmud—as “BNP spokespersons” and warned of forcing their resignations if reform recommendations are not implemented.
Meanwhile, Information Adviser Mahfuz Alam issued a Facebook post on Thursday expressing regret for any divisive statements or choice of words.
