Noakhali, May 30, 2025: Noakhali district recorded an unprecedented 285 millimeters of rainfall in the past 24 hours, marking the highest rainfall of the current season. According to the local meteorological office, this heavy downpour was triggered by an active monsoon low-pressure system. Mohammad Rafiqul Islam, the acting officer of the Noakhali Meteorological Office, confirmed this information on Friday (May 30) morning.
Due to the combined effects of a deep low-pressure system and the new moon, abnormal tidal surges have inundated low-lying areas across various upazilas in the district. Hundreds of homes, agricultural fields, and local markets have been submerged, leaving thousands of people stranded and facing severe hardships.
Mohammad Saiful Islam, a resident of Hatiya Upazila, said, “Our primary mode of communication is waterways, but the rivers are now turbulent. For the past few days, all connections to and from Hatiya have been severed. We are struggling to get by.”
Mohammad Rafiqul Islam, the acting officer of the meteorological office, stated, “The heavy rainfall is due to an active monsoon low-pressure system. In the 24 hours ending at 6 AM today, we recorded 285 mm of rainfall, the highest this year.”
District Administrator Khandaker Istiaq Ahmed informed that the affected areas have been declared at-risk zones. Relief assistance is being sent to the flood-affected regions, and all necessary preparations have been made to address potential further disasters.
